SOME OF THE COMMENTS:

"The lights are a very poor display and I feel embarrassed that we have asked a TV personality to come and switch a few meagre lights on. Is this the best that the organisers of the Christmas lights can do? Surely it would be better to spend less on a soap star and let the money saved go on providing a more colourful and may be a moving display of lights."

"I think Christmas is for children so I think lights should be attractive to them. I personally would rather say to my 2 year old grandson look at the penguin, or rudolph, or santa, than look at the stars all in a row - one of the reasons I took him to Milton Keynes not Kettering! Some people's houses around Kettering are more interesting to my grandson than Kettering town. Some years back we had a Santa and some real reindeer come to the town and I would much rather have that sort of thing for the children than an actor from the TV. By having a 'celebrity' a word you would probably use and I wouldn't, you merely encourage a lot of teenagers to come into the town who then run around and annoy most of the shoppers. While you continue to spend your money on actors I shall continue to take my money to other towns. My Christmas present money is probably worth £500 to £600 to the shops."

"Every year we have the same old boring lights, I work in Silver street and the lights in this street are disgusting (if you can find them!). They ask the shops if they will help with the costs, which is an insult considering they use the same lights every year. Instead of getting stars to turn on the lights they should use the money towards better decorations. I have shopped in many places at this time of year and kettering has to be the worse for decorations, even small towns like B/Latimar make more of an effort. Sorry for being such a moaning minny but i'm just being honest."

"They are pathetic compared to other towns, our lights have always been a let down! Why don't our carnival queen of the year or someone of importance to our town turn on the lights!"

"bring back the lights that went from lamppost to lampost...please"

POLL: Parking Meters in Kettering Town Centre

QUESTION: "How would you feel if parking meters were introduced onto the main streets in Kettering Town centre?" (Poll carried out in conjunction with Kettering Chamber of Trade and Commerce)

RESULTS:

Number of participants voting AGAINST parking meters: 83%

Number of participants voting FOR parking meters: 17%

SOME OF THE COMMENTS:

People have got to become realistic about parking their cars in town centres. Yes I think it would free up spaces for more people to pay 'quick visits' to the town.

As long as they were not ridiculously expensive like the main car parks in Kettering. I rarely shop in Kettering now as I think that the charges are ridiculous, especially considering the lack of good shops in the town centre.

I think it would mean on street paring was easier, but it would push the problem further out so that areas like the Headlands became even more conjested. The real problem is that there is not enough parking in Kettering, and how that can be overcome is a real problem. It would be interesting to know how many car parking spaces have been lost over the last five years?

The arrival of parking meters would soon be followed by the withdrawal of the free time in the Car Parks. Kettering seems to be convinced that the town can flourish with out shoppers coming into town to spend money!! It is about time car drivers were not penalised every where we go.

THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO TOOK PART IN THE POLL.
